CASE STUDY – Car Park Construction – Surfacing & Civils

Spadeoak was privileged to be the chosen contractor to construct a visitors car park and access routes at the The Studios in Leavesden.
Spadeoak was tasked with developing the 30,000m² area into parking with kerbing, drainage, lighting, CCTV columns, tree pits and pedestrian islands. The car park would house over 750 vehicles and an additional 21 coach parking bays.

Spadeoak was commissioned to construct a new car park for the Studios in Leavesden.
The existing undeveloped soft landscape area was not utilised, until recently purchased the area with accompanying buildings to develop The Studios.

This site itself sits on 100acres of land and welcomes over 2.2million visitors each year. The site originally was a British airfield created in the 1940’s and was an important centre for aircraft production during World War II. The site has also hosted the filming of others Warner films such as James Bond GoldenEye and Star Wars The Phantom Menace as well as Harry Potter.

Spadeoak was tasked with developing the 30,000m² area into parking with access routes, kerbing, drainage, lighting and CCTV columns.

The project began with a huge earthworks programme, extracting and re-utilising over 40,000m³ of earthworks.
Following the earthworks storm and foul water drainage systems, baffles and catch-pits were installed as well as the electrical and security ducting that was placed in situ prior to the installation of the Terram and Geo Grid systems to support and evenly distribute the vehicle weight protecting and prolonging the subbase.

The base course was created from crushed rock, over 1,200 lorry loads were levelled and compact to create a sturdy base layer for the surface course to be laid upon.

Spadeoak civils teams then installed over 3kilometres of pre-cast concrete kerbs around the perimeter of the car park, access routes and to create the tree pits and pedestrian islands.

Lamp post and CCTV column bases were installed around the perimeter and within the car park to ensure sufficient light would cover the entire car park for visitors attending the evening tours.

To improve visitor experience and safety tree pits and pedestrian islands were built within the car park and a new boundary fence was installed.

Over 500 lorry loads of asphalt was used to surface the area and over 10km of thermoplastic white lining was applied to the car park to complete the project.

Completed to schedule, our works were handed back to a very happy client, delighted to have the roadways and car park completed in plenty of time before the studio opening.
