CASE STUDY – The O2 Arena Padel Courts
Sports specialist Spadeoak was privileged to support our client with the construction of 2 padel courts at The O2 Arena London.
Spadeoak completed works at the temporary location at The O2 Arena, constructed an elevated deck for the padel courts to sit, with seating area and 40ft container used as the sites reception, shop and bar.
With over 20 years of sports court construction experience Spadeoak were delighted to be chosen to represent our client in the construction of 2 padel courts situated at The O2 Arena London.
The sport of padel is a mix of Tennis and Squash. It is usually played in doubles in an enclosed court surrounded by walls of glass and metallic mash. The court is a third of the size of a tennis court. The ball can bounce off any wall but can only hit the surface once before being returned. Points can be scored when the ball bounces twice in the competitors end.
A padel court measures 20 metres long and 10 metres wide with the back walls being made of a glass up to a height of 3 metres, the rest of the court is closed using a metallic mesh to a height of 4 metres. Sand is used on the playing surface to support grip.
The padel courts would be located on a temporary 720m² area until 2025 when the courts will move to their own permanent canopied site opposite their current location. The temporary location was hard standing land available to position 2 courts.
To minimise any drainage issues the courts are built on a 530m² 400mm elevated deck, each court is true to size at 200m² with walkways around both courts.
The walkways and seating area are covered with a synthetic artificial grass. A 40ft container is used as the sites reception, shop and bar area and the seating area is complete with deck chairs and tables and chairs for comfort.
Dividing the area and the O2 delivery road is a 5m hoarding and netting system to prevent stray balls leaving the courts.
The project was completed to schedule, and handed back to a very happy client.
